Anti-Bullying

In our Composition 1 class, we had two speakers come in to talk about two different topics. The most recent speakers came into our classroom to talk to us about “anti-bullying”. About two and a half weeks ago, I walked into my Composition 1 class and saw two ladies standing in front of the class. Even before Mrs. Vallier came into the classroom, I knew that these two ladies were going to talk to us about an important issue. They told us that they were going to talk about “anti-bullying”.  I thought that this was going to be a boring speech because I have heard speeches like these before, but this was different. The two women put a piece a red tape into the middle of the room. I was curious on what we were going to do. They had half of us stand on one side of the line and the other half on the other side. The two ladies asked us several questions that really opened my mind. One of the biggest questions that stood out to me was “how many of you have ever been bullied before?”. Whoever had ever been bullied before had to step on the red line.  It was a shock to me how many people had been bullied before. A lot of people I didn’t expect to step on the red line did. Some of my fellow students were bullied physically or mentally. Although we didn’t share details, it still was an eye-opener to see some of my students on the line.   Another question that stood out to me was “have you ever witnessed anyone being bullied before?”.  Only a few people stood on the line.  I am glad that the two speakers came to our class about “anti-bullying”. Bullying is a huge topic right now and it happens all over the world. I feel that bullying should be stopped because there are people that either commit suicide or snap mentally. I think that both should stop.   Bullying is getting some attention in the media recently. With all the recent suicides happening involving young teens and bullying, it goes to show that bullying needs to stop.  This presentation was meaningful to me because although I have not been bullied, I have witnessed some of my friends being bullied. We were able to get them out of the bullying situation. It is something I not only want to not ever happen again to my friends but to anyone.  It was useful to me because it reiterated to me of some things I knew and it showed me some things I didn’t know.  I will use this information I learned so that I can help stop bullying around the world. I will remember this definitely the next time that I see somebody bullying or even if I am bullied myself. This presentation that the two ladies gave us really opened my eyes. I want to do something about the bullying in our world because it needs to stop and we can do something about it because nobody deserves to be bullied.

30 Years Into The Future

It’s the year 2041, I just woke up out of my bed which can now levitate off of the floor. My alarm clock startles me when I try to hit the snooze button. 30 years from now, the alarm clocks are in holographic form. I am able to jump from my bed to the floor. The bedrooms are bigger in the future and come equipped with a moving platform that can take you to anywhere in the house.  I use the platform to go to the bathroom to take a shower and brush my teeth. Since stairs are outdated at this time, there are escalators in every house. I walk outside to drive my car to go to College. When I get in my car, I look around and see that I have a GPS system equipped as well as a television for the back seats and surround sound speakers. There is a built in cooler between the drivers and passengers seat to keep things cold. In 2041, the cars can drive themselves unless you  tell the car that you want to take the wheel. I arrive at College and there is a parking spot for every car, no matter how big or small your car is. We do not have to stay at school the whole day. You only have to stay on school campus when you have classes. My first class is College Algebra. Every student that attends is given an iPad instead of using and wasting paper for school. Instead of teachers that are physically there, they appear on a floating television. Teachers give assignments by transmitting the information into each of our iPads. When we are done with our assignments and we want to turn them in, we press a button on our iPad that automatically transmits it back to the teacher in seconds. My next class was learning about the future. When the bell rings for us to be done with our class, we get up and are ready for lunch. I usually go to lunch at our food court section. Each day there are different restaurants where we can sample different foods that we want. Each of the foods are made to order. In 30 years from now, we don’t have to worry about health issues regarding food. That means we don’t have to worry about how much food we eat and how much calories are in the food. After lunch, I am done with my classes and I leave the College campus. I arrive back at home and park my car in the garage, The garage is made of a substance that is very hard to break or bend. Instead of having to drive to gyms, each house has a built in gym. With each treadmill I have in my gym, there are either television sets or itunes hooked up to the machines. There are televisions at each station where there is a trainer on the screen. You have a personal trainer without having them come to your house. Once I am done with my personal gym for the night, I take the escalator back up into my room. I stand on the moving platform until I get to my room. I take a shower, brush my teeth, and lay in my bed. My room has the ability to have an open roof. I press the remote to open up the roof of my room and stare at the stars until I fall asleep.

Food Advertisements

If you have always wanted to get more bang for your buck at a fast food restaurant, then you might choose Taco Bell. This advertisement might look delicious with all of the food it contains. It contains 1 bacon wrap supreme as well as 1 cheesy gordita crunch and a 32oz fountain drink. Now, it all does look good, but looks can be deceiving.

I feel the advertisement tries to persuade the audience by making the meal look huge in the advertisements as well as the big font. When someone sees the huge font and a huge meal in an advertisement, it usually will catch someone’s eye. The person immediately wants to try it because it is a new food at the restaurant.  It shows how much food you can get in the box as well as what is inside of each item of food. They use bright colors for each “box”. The purple background makes the advertisement stand out among the rest. It is a new product from Taco Bell, so, the regulars at Taco Bell will most likely try it because they love Taco Bell and enjoy it. It is a way to bring in business in this economy, but at what cost? Are you willing to risk the health of people? The advertisement is a bit manipulative because they want you to believe that since there are vegetables in the food, it makes the food healthy, but in reality, it is really not that healthy for you. 1 big box meal from Taco Bell is about 1,220 calories. The big box has 3,510 milligrams of sodium, 54 grams of fat, 105 milligrams cholesterol and 39. 5% of the calories are fat. That proves to show that even if the advertisements show vegetables, the meal might not be healthy.

The Environmental Footprint

I have never taken a quiz like this in my life. I was intrigued when Mrs. Vallier told us about this quiz. I am so glad I did the quiz because it really opened up my eyes to several different things. I was really interested in knowing how much energy I waste on an everyday basis. I took the more detailed quiz because I really wanted to have detailed answers.  I was a bit shocked with my results to be honest. Some results in a good way and some in a bad way. I would need about 4 Earth’s to support my lifestyle and my activities. I also found out that it would take about 18 global acres to support my activities as well. I am so thankful for my Ecological Footprint. The Ecological Footprint measures the demands by humans on the ecosystem here on Earth. It represents the amount of sea area and land needed to supply resources for our population. Not only does it give you several different results to your answers, but it also shows you where you can improve on. I expected that the majority of my ecological footprint would be based off of services. I guess I kind of take what I have for granted. I am so reliant on services and technology such as cell phones and laptops that I probably wouldn’t know how to function without them. I also do not eat the healthiest foods in the world because some of the foods I eat are processed foods. I really didn’t look at the big picture. I waste bundles of amounts of energy with the lifestyle that I have and not eating the healthiest foods is not good for my health. So, I need to make a few changes. From here on out, I plan to shut off the lights once I leave the room. I also plan to shut the television off when I am not watching it as well as watching what I eat a bit better.

Introduction to Me

Hello, my name is Eric Seldin and I am from Coconut Creek, Florida. I was born in Boynton Beach, Florida but I moved from Boynton Beach to Deerfield Beach when I was little.  I have moved several times in my life, but all in the same state. I moved from Deerfield Beach to Coconut Creek when I entered the 4th grade.  When I entered the 4th grade, I learned that my parents were getting a divorce. It took a huge toll on all of my family. But, as time passed, the emotional stress of the divorce lessened and it made us stronger.  What helped me through the divorce was learning how to cook. Since both of my parents were chefs, they taught me how to cook and I picked up on it very easily. I went to high school in Coconut Creek and I graduate with my class with an NAHS cord. I really enjoyed high school and the experiences I had there. I was generally a good student and got good grades in school. I now go to Florida Gulf Coast University and I couldn’t be any happier. I love that I am going to this school because everyone here is so nice and willing to help each other out. I love where I am living. It is my home away from home. My roommates are really cool as well and I get along really well with all of them. We really like to hang out with each other and the friends that we have made here. I have met so many people who are really out-going as well. I really like going to college because it gives me the right amount of space from my parents. I am looking forward to learning in College as well as wanting the College experience. I feel that being in College so far has really helped me grow up a bit.  I am able to take responsibility for myself. If something happens, it is all on me.  I am also happy because College is teaching me more about myself. I am at Florida Gulf Coast University to receive a Bachelor’s Degree and Resort and Hospitality Management. I have always been interested in hotels as well as resorts and I have always had a fascination of traveling the world. I want to make and own hotels around the world.  I want to incorporate the different cultures into the hotel I run, so, each hotel of mine you go to will be a different experience. I hope this gave you a good description of who I am. I hope you all learn about me as the class goes on and I also look forward to learning about you.
